NAKED GILLS
NUDIBRANCH PHOTOGRAPHY IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!
Nudibranchs are one of the most sought after macro subjects in underwater photography. Their brilliant colors and various shapes create impressive images that attract viewers. They move slowly and often stay still which allows the photographer time to capture incredible detail and compose the perfect shot. The kaleidoscopic patterns of nudibranchs is the obvious reason why underwater photographers favour them. Shooting nudibranchs can be challenging. Even though they don’t move and don’t hide when we get closer to them, it can still be tricky.
PHOTOGRAPHIC TREASURE
APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS
The best things come in small packages, and plenty of divers would agree. The underwater world becomes ever more fascinating when you learn to dive slowly, look closely and appreciate the little things. Nudibranchs and sea slugs are mostly smaller than the end of your thumb, but their intense coloration makes them the ocean’s brightest jewels.
SHOWCASE THEIR FEATURES
It is always best to have the eyes and the rhinophores (head tentacles) in focus. Nudibranchs do actually have eyes, and while visible in some species, they are invisible in others. They are located to the front of the animal, slightly below and ahead of the rhinophores.
